“Babe, what am I wearing?”
It’s a question I’ve grown accustom to when my husband and I are getting ready for a special occasion.
As soon as I hear him utter these words, I make a bee line to his closet and start creating his look. Sometimes I have his outfit completed in a jiffy, but at other times, it takes me a while. Those difficult days are usually due to one particular dilemma – choosing an outfit for him that coordinates well with mine.
Why Bother?
There’s no doubt that coordinating well with your partner is a chic way to arrive on the scene at any event.
I mean, think of how David and Victoria Beckham slay the red carpet together, or how Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are always in sync at any awards show they attend together. It’s freaking adorable!
Their famous examples confirm that twinning with your partner is a powerful statement, giving you the opportunity to present a united front, and, not to mention, get kick ass photos in the process.
And who wouldn’t want that?
But that’s not all.
These powerhouse celebrities, including Beyonce and Jay Z, remind us that we can be in a committed relationship, and still be true to our personal aesthetic.
However, the question remains, how do you style coordinate with your significant other? And, how can you accomplish a twinning ensemble without being matchy-matchy?
How to Style Coordinate With Your Significant Other…Without Being Matchy-Matchy
(1) Make sure that you’re dressing on the “same level.” In other words, please look like you’re going to the same event. For example, if you’re both attending a corporate holiday party, basketball shorts and a Nike shirt won’t work well with a metallic midi skirt and lace blouse. Make sense?
(2) Focus on color coordinating. Think complimentary colors like yellow and maroon, pink and teal, or green and blue. Pairing colors like these will help both of you look like a single unit without being identical. You can even use your accessories to match colors. You just don’t need to be matchy-matchy!
(3) Document the moment. Did you see that? Yes, I said it. Document the moment! Snap some photos with your special someone to commemorate the occasion. I mean, if you’re anything like my husband and I, dressing up with your significant other can be challenging at times. So why not celebrate the win?
