Leonardo da Vinci was onto something when he said that simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication.
Not only is it a beautiful expression of what ‘classic’ means, it also summarizes the power of subtlety, something that is occasionally lost in trends.
Just the other day, I was invited to a lunch with some friends and I used the opportunity to test Leonardo’s theory. Normally, I opt for bright colors and bold patterns but that Sunday, I chose to wear all black leather and a nude scarf. The impact of my monotone ensemble was unexpected.
Upon my arrival, I immediately heard, ‘Alright, then!’ coming from the kitchen. It was my friend and her husband. I smiled, and thanked them for the compliment but that wasn’t the end. A majority of those who arrive expressed how tasteful my outfit was.
Again, it was unexpected but it proved Leonardo’s point. Simplicity is sophistication. And my extra two cents, is that it’s very easy to accomplish with all black.
